Structured Programs
Coached Marathon Training in Chicago
These programs offer coached workouts, training plans, pace groups, and supported long runs. Most run from June through October, timed to the Chicago Marathon. If you're building toward a Boston qualifying time, a structured program can make the difference.
CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association)
Chicago's largest and most structured marathon training program. If you want a city-wide community with 11+ training sites, pace groups for every speed, and a proven track record, this is the default choice for most Chicago Marathon runners.
Who it's for: Almost anyone. CARA is the biggest and most accessible program in Chicago. You'll find your pace group whether you're running 8:00s or 12:00s.

Who it's for: Runners who want boutique energy with real coaching, plus the bonus of store discounts and early access to gear drops.

The premium option. You're paying for the lounge membership perks, including private locker rooms, showers, and an indoor space to prep and recover, layered on top of a legit marathon training program.
Who it's for: Serious runners who want the full package: coaching, indoor space, and a boutique experience worth the premium.
edgeathletelounge.comHeartbreak Hill Running Company
Chicago outpost of the Boston-based running store with a strong performance culture. Coached programs from the store with a focus on race-specific training and Boston qualifying. If you're chasing a BQ, you'll find your people here.

No-Cost Run Clubs Worth Knowing

Nike Run Club Chicago
Free weekly runs from Nike store locations. Monday and Wednesday evenings, plus occasional events with guest coaches. Good for runners who want structure without the price tag.
Adidas Runners Chicago
Tuesday evening runs and weekend long runs. Free to join. Sign up in the app and show up. Brand energy with real miles and occasional special sessions.
November Project Chicago
Free outdoor fitness movement with serious cult energy. Wednesday AMs at Ohio Street Beach, Friday AMs at Millennium Park. Expect high fives and genuine accountability.
GumboFit

Tortugas Run Club
Founded by David Ruiz. Tortugas means tortoises, and all paces are welcome. Sunday 10 AM at Harrison Park. Latino community, very welcoming.
Lakeview Run Club (LVRC)
Up to 5 miles, 7 to 13 min/mile plus walking. Post-run social at Rosco's. Two weekly options, making it one of the most active neighborhood clubs in the city.
Palmer Bar Runs
Wednesday evening bar runs. You run, then you drink. No coaching, no pressure, just miles and vibes. Great way to explore different neighborhoods.
Second City Track Club
Track workouts, structured training, and a road and track racing team. For faster runners who want teammates and race goals, not a casual jog club.
Pro Tip: Stack a Program + a Club
A lot of Chicago runners combine a structured program with a neighborhood club. For example: CARA for long runs and workouts, then Lakeview Run Club for easy Tuesday miles and post-run social time. You don't have to pick just one community.

Decision Guide
How to Find Your Group
The best program is the one you'll actually show up to. Here's how to think through the decision.
I want the most structured, largest program in Chicago
→ CARA. Nothing touches the scale, the 11+ locations, or the community. If you want a coach, pace groups, and a proven 20-miler in the plan, start here.
I want to train near Oak Park or the western suburbs
→ Fleet Feet Oak Park or CARA Elmhurst site. Both have Prairie Path long run access and full coached programs. Oak Park Runners Club is the free option.
I want a free option for weekday miles
→ Nike Run Club, November Project, or your neighborhood club. Stack these with a paid program. Many runners do CARA long runs + free club for easy days.
I'm chasing a Boston Qualifier
→ Heartbreak Hill or Edge Athlete Lounge. Both have a strong performance culture and coached programs built around race goals. CES is also worth looking at.
I want social + community first, training second
→ 3Run2, Lakeview Run Club, November Project, GumboFit. Real community with miles underneath, not the other way around.
I'm a beginner and nervous about group runs
→ CARA (they have 12:00+ pace groups), Tortugas Run Club, or Lakeview Run Club. All are explicitly welcoming. You will not be the slowest person there.
