Ways to Get In
There are multiple paths to a Chicago bib. Pick the one that fits your situation and timeline.
1. The LotteryNON-GUARANTEED
Real odds: With 120,000+ applicants and roughly 50,000 total spots, the actual lottery pool is smaller than it looks. Subtract the 20,000+ guaranteed entries (time qualifiers, legacy runners, charity), and standard applicants are likely looking at 30-35% odds, not the near-fifty-percent figure that circulated in earlier years. The post-pandemic running boom has made this significantly more competitive.
- Apply early in the window.
- Pick a charity backup before results drop. Minimums are lower before lottery day than after.
- Watch for a pending credit card charge on December 11th as an early indicator of acceptance.
- Do not submit duplicate applications. You will be disqualified with no refund.
2. Time QualifierGUARANTEED ENTRY
Who It Is For: runners with a recent verifiable qualifying time on a certified course after Jan 1, 2024 (2-year lookback window).
2026 qualifying standards (based on your age on October 11, 2026):
| Age Group | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| 18–34 | 2:45:00 | 3:15:00 |
| 35–39 | 2:50:00 | 3:20:00 |
| 40–44 | 2:55:00 | 3:30:00 |
| 45–49 | 3:05:00 | 3:40:00 |
| 50–54 | 3:15:00 | 3:50:00 |
| 55–59 | 3:30:00 | 4:05:00 |
| 60–64 | 3:50:00 | 4:30:00 |
| 65–69 | 4:15:00 | 4:55:00 |
| 70+ | 4:40:00 | 5:20:00 |
3. Legacy FinishersGUARANTEED ENTRY
Who It Is For: runners who have finished Chicago five or more times in the last ten years.
Only Chicago finishes count. DNS or DNF does not count toward the five.
Note: if you were registered for the cancelled 2020 race, that year may count toward your legacy tally. Confirm with the official site.
4. Distance Series FinishersGUARANTEED ENTRY
The local loophole. Complete all three 2026 Bank of America Chicago Distance Series events, Shamrock Shuffle 8K, Chicago 13.1, and the 2026 Marathon, and you are guaranteed entry the following year. For Chicago-area runners, this is widely considered the most reliable way to avoid lottery stress entirely. It requires committing to three races across the spring and fall, but you skip the December anxiety completely.

Who It Is For: anyone willing to fundraise for an official partner.
Timing matters. Fundraising minimums are tiered based on when you sign up:
- Before lottery results (October to December 11): minimums are typically around $1,750.
- After lottery results: minimums jump to $2,500 or higher, and popular teams may already be full.
If you are serious about charity entry, do not wait for lottery results to start looking. Pick a team during the application window.

6. Package EntriesGUARANTEED ENTRY
For international runners, tour operators are often the only reliable guaranteed path in late in the cycle. Options like Marathon Tours and 2:09 Events bundle entry with hotel and travel logistics. Packages typically run $1,500-$3,000+.
One consistent piece of advice from international runners: book a free cancellation hotel as early as possible, even before you know if you have a bib. Chicago hotel prices during marathon weekend spike significantly, and the exchange rate adds another layer of cost. Booking refundable gives you flexibility without locking in at a premium.

Deferral is officially a cancellation with a guaranteed spot the following year, not a postponement. Here is what that actually means:
- You lose your entry fee. The $250-$260 is non-refundable regardless of reason.
- Cancellation deadline for the 2026 event is Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
- After cancelling, you will receive a separate email in late October or early November with a link to claim your guaranteed 2027 spot. This window is short, if you miss that email, the guaranteed entry is gone.
- You pay the full registration fee again the following year.
The Allianz insurance alternative: if you purchased refundable registration insurance at checkout and have a qualifying reason (injury, illness, family emergency), filing an insurance claim may return your entry fee in cash. For runners with a doctor's note, this is often a cleaner outcome than the official deferral process.
💰 Costs & Fees
Registration Fees
- U.S. Residents: $250
- Non-U.S. Residents: $260
- Processing fee applied at registration
- All fees are non-refundable
Refundable Registration Option
For an additional $50, you can purchase refundable registration insurance during checkout. Refunds available if you cannot race for covered reasons (injury, illness, family emergency). Must be purchased at time of registration and cannot be added later. Review terms at chicagomarathon.com/registration-insurance
Additional Costs to Consider
- Charity fundraising: $2,200 minimum during the application window, some teams increase later
- Travel: flights if coming from out of town
- Lodging: two to four nights downtown can add up
- Training costs: shoes, gear, optional coaching
- Expo shopping: official merch and gear
❓ Registration FAQs
Can I get a refund?
No. Fees are non-refundable. If you purchased Allianz insurance at checkout and have a qualifying reason, that is your best option for recovering costs.
Can I transfer my bib?
No, and do not try. Chicago requires photo ID at the Expo to pick up your bib. There is no transfer window. Running under someone else's name risks a ban from all future World Marathon Majors for both runners.
How old do you have to be?
16 on race day (October 11, 2026). Runners who are 16 or 17 must submit a signed parental waiver during the online application.
How do wave assignments work?
Based on your projected finish time. You can move to a slower corral but not a faster one.
Is there a time limit?
Six hours thirty minutes from your start time.
What if I get injured before race day?
Medical deferral may be available with a doctor's note on official letterhead submitted by the deadline. Approval is not automatic. If approved, you defer to 2027 and pay the full entry fee again. If you have Allianz insurance, that may be a better path, see the deferral section above.
Can I run with a friend?
Yes. You can move back to a slower corral to run with someone. You cannot move to a faster corral.
What if I miss my charity fundraising minimum?
You are personally responsible for the shortfall. Your credit card on file will be charged for any amount you fall short.
Do corporate matching gifts count?
Usually yes. Confirm with your specific charity team.
When do I get my bib number?
Typically assigned two to four weeks before the race. You pick up the physical bib at the Expo with photo ID.
Can I update my projected finish time?
Yes, up until a few weeks before race day. You can only move to a slower corral.
What about 2027 registration?
The 2027 application window typically opens the week after the 2026 race, with lottery notifications the first or second Thursday of December 2026.
🎯 Application Strategy Guide
For first-timers
Apply to the lottery on day one. Before you apply, pick two or three charity teams as a backup. If you do not get selected, move to charity the same day, minimums are lower before results than after.
For locals
Seriously consider the Distance Series path. Three races, zero lottery stress.
