Chicago Run Clubs

The most complete directory of running clubs and groups in Chicago and the suburbs. 76+ clubs organized by neighborhood, vibe, and what you're training for.

Chicago has one of the strongest run club cultures in the country. There are clubs for every pace, every neighborhood, every vibe, competitive crews chasing sub-3 hours, neighborhood groups that end at a bar, identity-based communities building something bigger than miles, and everything in between.

I don't run with a club regularly, most of my miles are solo early morning runs around Elmhurst, but I cross paths with the running community constantly. The Elmhurst Running Club rolls past my neighborhood every Saturday morning at 6am. I've raced CARA events. I know what these communities do for people's consistency and enjoyment of the sport.

If you're new to Chicago running or new to running in general, finding a group is one of the best things you can do.

Can't Keep Up With Club Schedules?

Club websites are notoriously out of date. Chicago Running Passport (@chicagorunningpassport on Instagram) tracks daily meetups for nearly every club in the area in one place. Worth following if you're trying to find where a specific club is running this week.

How to Find the Right Club

Start with location and schedule. The best club is the one you'll actually show up to. A great club an hour away is worse than a decent one three blocks from your apartment.

Then think about what you actually want from it. Some people want structured training with pace groups and coaching. Others want community and someone to run with on Sunday mornings. A few want competitive teammates and race goals. Most clubs skew toward one of these.

Pace matters more than people admit. A 9-minute miler joining a competitive track club is going to have a bad time. Most clubs list their pace ranges, use them.

For marathon training, CARA is the default answer for most Chicago runners. It's the largest structured program in the city, covers the suburbs, and the Saturday long runs are a Chicago institution. If you want something more boutique with coaching and facilities, Edge Athlete Lounge or Fleet Feet are worth the cost.

For competitive runners, sub-3 hour marathon territory, DW Running is where serious Chicago runners tend to land. For genuinely elite runners, Second City Track Club operates at a different level entirely.

For suburban runners, most towns have a local club worth checking out before making the commute into the city.

    Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA)

If you're training for Chicago and don't know where to start, CARA is the answer most locals give you. The Saturday long runs draw hundreds of runners across 11 suburban locations and the pace groups cover almost every runner. I've run CARA races, the organization is solid.
