The Life Time Chicago Half Marathon is one of the most unique races in the city. You run on a closed DuSable Lake Shore Drive, something that almost never happens, through a course that is flat, fast, and completely exposed to the September sun. It draws a large field, has a legitimate post-race festival, and hands out a medal that is, by widespread agreement, unreasonably large.
It also falls two weeks before the Chicago Marathon. For anyone training for October, that timing is either an asset or a trap depending on how you race it.
This guide covers the logistics, the course reality, the post-race experience, and how to think about this race if your real goal is the marathon finish line in October.

π Getting There
Jackson Park is on the South Side. Lake Shore Drive closes at 6:00 AM. If you are not parked or dropped off before that, your morning gets complicated fast. Reddit consensus is that 5:30 AM is the danger zone. If you are still in traffic at that point, your options narrow quickly.

Rideshare
Driving and Parking
- βUse the Dan Ryan (I-90/94) and head east toward MSI. Do not take Lake Shore Drive regardless of what Google Maps says.
- βMuseum of Science and Industry garage opens at 5:00 AM. This is the closest option.
- βIf you are not in the MSI garage by 5:15 AM, pivot to Midway Plaisance street parking and jog over as your warmup.
- βFrom the north: Lake Shore Drive closes at 31st Street at 6:00 AM. Exit at 57th Street before closure or use King Dr south to 55th Street after.
- βFrom the south: Skyway to Stony Island or Dan Ryan to Garfield Boulevard.
- βCarpool if possible. Parking is limited near Jackson Park.
π¦ Packet Pickup
The expo is branded as a Pre-Race Party and held at Navy Pier, Festival Hall A.
| Friday, September 25 | 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM |
| Saturday, September 26 | 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM |
- βDownload the Life Time Digital App before you arrive. Bib pickup requires a QR code scan from the app.
- βPacket mailing is available but must be selected by mid-August.
- βSaturday morning at 9:00 AM: shakeout run led by race coaches starting at Navy Pier. Worth doing if you are in town the night before.
- βYou cannot pick up someone else's bib without written authorization.
πΊοΈ The Course
The course starts and ends in Jackson Park near the Statue of the Republic, locally called the Golden Lady. It is flat, fast on paper, and surprisingly harder than expected due to the heat and exposure.
Miles 1 to 2: Into the Park
Internal park roads on South Cornell Drive heading toward the lake. Tree-lined, calm, nothing dramatic. Use these miles to settle in and find your rhythm before you hit the highway.
Miles 3 to 11: The LSD Stretch
You enter DuSable Lake Shore Drive heading north. The turnaround is just north of the I-55 overpass near 31st Street. You then run south back toward Jackson Park.
This is where the race lives and dies. A few things worth knowing:
- βThe heat sink is real. Even on a 65 degree morning, sun reflecting off the asphalt makes it feel significantly warmer.
- βCarry your own hydration if you can. Aid stations around miles 9 and 10 struggled to keep cups filled during the 2025 heat.
- βThe turnaround near 31st Street is a hairpin. It gets congested in a dense pack. Slow down before it and stay to the outside.
- βA north wind means a headwind for the entire southbound return from mile 7 to mile 12. Check the forecast the night before.
- βYou cannot actually see the lake for large stretches due to the concrete barriers. The view is mostly wide lanes of empty highway.
Miles 12 to 13.1: Back to Jackson Park
You exit the highway and return to Jackson Park for the finish. There are ramps and a brief incline near the 63rd Street underpass that catches people off guard after ten miles of flat highway. Save something for the park finish. Do not spend your entire kick at mile 12.
π€οΈ Weather
- βExpect a start temperature of 58 to 62 degrees that climbs to 72 or higher by the time later finishers cross the line.
- βThe feels-like temperature on the LSD stretch is typically 5 to 10 degrees higher due to asphalt and sun.
- βSeptember humidity runs higher than October. Treat electrolytes as mandatory from mile 3 onward.
- βWear a hat and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen before you leave your hotel even at a 7:00 AM start.
- βA north wind makes the back half significantly harder. A south wind helps. Check the forecast the night before.
- βDo not let the comfortable start temperature fool you into skipping early aid stations.
π£ Spectator Guide
Spectators cannot access DuSable Lake Shore Drive during the race. The highway is closed and there is no pedestrian access to miles 3 through 11. The best spots are at the cross streets that bridge over or connect to the highway.
| 31st Street | See runners heading north toward the turnaround and again heading south on the return. Two sightings from one spot. |
| Oakwood Boulevard | Good position for the southbound return around miles 8 to 9. |
| 47th Street | Another double sighting opportunity on the return stretch. |
| Jackson Park Finish | The most energy is near the finish on S. Richards Dr. inside the park. |
πΊ Post-Race Festival
The Finish Fest is held near the Statue of the Republic and is a local favorite. Hot food, live music, and a beer garden. The omelets and brats are a genuine post-race treat and rare for a half marathon.
- βThe free beer included with registration has frequently been Heineken 0.0 in recent years. If you want a full-strength brew, plan to head to a bar in Hyde Park post-race.
- βThe medal features a spinning Chicago star in the center and is large. Multiple runners have described it as a neck injury hazard. It is not subtle.
- βGear check uses the clear plastic bag provided at packet pickup. Keep car keys or anything you need immediately on your person rather than checked.
π Gear Check
- βUse the clear plastic bag provided at packet pickup. No backpacks or hydration vests through security.
- βAttach your gear check tag before you leave your hotel.
- βPack wet wipes, a change of dry clothes, recovery slides, and a light layer for after the finish.
- βThe gear check area gets congested post-race. Do not check anything you need immediately.
- βFor a full rundown of everything I use on race day, see the gear page.
π― Using This Race as a Chicago Marathon Tune-Up
The Life Time Chicago Half falls two weeks before the Chicago Marathon. That timing makes it a solid fitness check and dress rehearsal. It also makes it a trap if you race it wrong.
- Run at your Chicago Marathon goal pace, not half marathon race effort. Thirteen miles at your intended full marathon speed gives you real data on whether that pace is sustainable without the recovery cost of a max effort.
- Use it as a dress rehearsal. Wear the exact shoes, socks, and clothes you plan to wear in October. Eat the same pre-race breakfast at the same time relative to the gun. Practice your gel timing and hydration strategy.
- Two weeks out is your last chance to test anything before the real thing.
The Life Time Chicago Half is worth being on your radar. The LSD course is a genuine Chicago experience, the post-race festival is a local favorite, and the medal is aggressively large. Plan your way there, manage the heat, and if you are two weeks from Chicago, run it smart.
